Healthy Vs – Unhealthy Brain

We rarely stop to consider that the way we live, think, speak, feel, and act is shaped primarily by how our brain functions.

Every day, we face significant stress — at home, at work, financially, emotionally. Chronic stress has been linked to multiple brain-related problems, including the atrophy of memory centers such as the hippocampus, weakened immunity, and cognitive decline.

We focus so much on the external world that we forget a fundamental truth: our reactions do not come from circumstances, but from how the brain interprets them.

Most of the time, we think, feel, and act compulsively — without realizing that these patterns reveal how our brain is functioning… and how dysregulated it may be.

We often say:

“You made me angry.”
“It’s your fault.”
“You upset me.”
“You hurt me.”

But in reality, the person or situation has nothing to do with the emotional storm inside us. Our reactions come from within, not from outside.

What Pressure Reveals

Take an orange and squeeze it. What comes out?
Orange juice — not apple juice, not pineapple juice.

No matter when you squeeze it — morning, noon, or night — only orange juice will appear.

The same is true for us. What comes out of us already exists inside us.
External pressure doesn’t create reactions; it reveals our internal state.

Understanding the Brain Changed Everything

Years ago, I didn’t know any of this. After graduating from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York, I continued my training at Dr. Daniel Amen’s University — one of America’s most respected psychiatrists — studying how the brain drives behavior, addiction, anger, decision-making, and cognitive health.

As I learned these principles, everything began to make sense. I finally understood how much I had unknowingly harmed my own brain — mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Reading Change Your Brain, Change Your Life became a turning point. I realized how much inner work was required — and how unresolved patterns had kept me stuck in every area of my life.

That moment marked the beginning of my journey into self-awareness and spiritual growth — a journey I continue today so I can also support others.

Change never begins outside of us. It always starts within.

When the Brain Is Under Stress

For years, I struggled with parts of myself I didn’t understand: irritability, anxiety, sadness, emotional reactivity. I didn’t know these states were actively harming my brain.

The brain is incredibly delicate — soft like warm butter or tofu — while the skull is rigid and uneven. Even small physical impacts can affect brain function.

But beyond physical injury, everyday habits also damage the brain:

  • Poor diet and excess sugar
  • Alcohol and unnecessary medications
  • Emotional trauma
  • Chronic stress and anxiety
  • Sleep deprivation or sleep apnea
  • Obesity and diabetes

Chronic stress is especially destructive. Elevated cortisol kills cells in the hippocampus, reduces neuron density, weakens memory, and shrinks brain structures responsible for emotional regulation and decision-making.

Signs of a Strained Brain

When the brain isn’t functioning well, you may notice:

  • Blood sugar imbalance
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Poor focus and forgetfulness
  • Irritation and impulsivity
  • Insomnia and chronic fatigue
  • Low vitality and motivation
  • Poor decision-making
  • High blood pressure
  • Reduced libido and hormonal imbalance

A dysfunctional brain makes life harder in every possible way.

A healthy brain, however, makes you calmer, clearer, more resilient, and more emotionally stable.

How to Support Brain Health

Small, consistent choices matter more than drastic changes:

  • Conscious breathwork
  • Regular physical movement
  • Balanced, nourishing nutrition
  • Adequate and restorative sleep
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Targeted supplementation when needed
  • Stress management
  • Transforming negative automatic thought patterns

Most people don’t value their health until illness appears — especially when it comes to the brain. Yet everything in your life depends on how well your brain works.

Take care of your brain — and your brain will take care of your life.
